3P's of diabetes

Polyuria, Polyphagia, Polydipsia are the 3p’s of diabetes.

The 3 P’s of Diabetes [Polyuria, Polyphagia, Polydipsia] Explained!

Diabetes is a medical condition affecting people across the globe. If you have diabetes, you will have it for your entire life. There is no cure for diabetes. Fortunately, it can be managed. All you need to do is to make sure that the blood sugar level is within the normal range.

A significant part of diabetes management is being aware of the signs and symptoms. There are various symptoms associated with diabetes, but there are three cardinal signs you should watch out for. They are called the 3 Ps of diabetes.

These symptoms can develop quickly, especially in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. ( see: the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes)

We are going to discuss in detail about the 3 P’s of Diabetes in this article.

#1 – Polyuria(One of the elements of the 3 P’s of Diabetes)

PolyuriaCauses of polyuria differential diagnosis

(Diabetes is one of the causes of (frequently urinating. )

Polyuria is the medical term for a feeling of having to urinate frequently. It is caused by a high content of sugar in the urine. Too much water in the body is lost through urination.

A patient will experience many sleepless nights because of frequent urination. What is more alarming is that not only the urgency to urinate is increased but as well as the amount of urine.

What is the cause of polyuria?

If the level of sugars in the blood is more than the normal range, the body will have to get rid of the excess sugar. The kidneys will filter the excess glucose in the blood through urination leading to an increase in frequency and amount of urine.

2.#Polydipsia (Second elements of the 3 P’s of Diabetes)

In the medical language, polydipsia means improved thirst and fluid intake and polydipsia means increased thirst.  As the patient urinates more than the usual, your body feels weak and goes into a dehydration mode. This results in elevated thirst and so the patient feels the need to drink more and more liquid.

Polyphagia/polyphagia diabetesWhat is the cause of Polydipsia?

An increase in thirst is usually caused by the excessive loss of water in the body secondary to frequent peeing. To quench thirst, a diabetic patient drinks a lot of drinking water.

However, the result is only temporary as the water being drunk will then be excreted in the urine. If you feel thirsty most of the time and at the same time pee too often, then you need to start suspecting diabetes, especially if diabetes runs in your family.

3.#Polyphagia/polyphagia diabetes(Third elements of the 3 P’s of Diabetes)

Polydipsia

It is the increase in appetite caused by the lack of production of insulin in the body. A person with diabetes poorly absorbs blood sugar in the tissue leading to a decreased in energy creation and an increased in appetite.

What’s sets diabetic patient’s hunger apart from the rest is that a person with diabetes tends to always feel hungry even after just finishing a full meal.

What is the reason for Polyphagia?

A normal healthy individual consumes food and converts it to glucose before the body can use it as energy. For the body to use glucose because an energy source, it needs the help of the hormone insulin.

In the case of a person with diabetes, the pancreas is definitely not producing enough insulin to facilitate allow the passage of glucose to the cells. The cells of the body are continuously starved for blood sugar.

The body sends a signal to the brain to eat more to supplement the body’s need for sugar. It’s the reason why a person with diabetes is always hungry even after consuming a full food.

What to keep in mind if you feel these signs (3P’s of diabetes)?

If you experience the 3Ps mentioned above, you need to seek medical attention, especially if you have a family history of diabetes.

Diabetes is something that should not be taken lightly since failure to manage the condition can be life-threatening. It could lead to diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state which could eventually result in coma or death.

What is hyperglycemia?

Hyperglycemia is a defining characteristic of diabetes when the blood glucose level is too high because the bódy isn’t properly using or don’t make the hormone insulin… Yóu gets glucose from the foods you eat.

Hyperglycemia Treatments:

Insulin is the only treatment of hyperglycemia.

Common symptoms of diabetes:

Urinating often.
Feeling very thirsty.
Feeling very hungry – even though you are eating.
Extreme fatigue.
Blurry vision.
Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal.
Weight loss – even though you are eating more (type 1)
Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

What warning signs and symptoms of diabetes are the same in men and women?

There are diabetes indicators and symptoms that both women and men have in common, for example:

Excessive thirst and hunger
Frequent urination (from urinary tract infections or kidney problems)
Weight loss or perhaps gain
Fatigue
Irritability
Blurred vision
Slow-healing wounds
Nausea
Skin infections
Darkening of skin in areas of body creases (acanthosis nigricans)
Breath odor that is fruity, sweet, or an acetone odor
Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet

Prediabetes Symptoms

Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough tó diagnose you with type 2 diabetes. About 40% of people in thé U. S. 18 and older have the condition, and 22% of those people don’t know they have it. Prediabetes typically has no symptoms or signs; however, it has been associated with being overweight.

What is prediabetes (pre-diabetes)?

pre-diabetesPrediabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than regular, but a person does not yet have diabétes. Prediabetes ánd high blood glucose levels are a risk factor for developing diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems. Other indicators prediabetes may include increased peeing, feeling you need to urinate more often, and/or increased being thirsty.

What warning signs and symptoms of diabetes are unique to men?

Signs and symptoms of diabetes exclusive to men include:

Erectile dysfunction (ED, impotence)
Retrograde ejaculation
Low testosterone (low-T)
Decreased sex drive (decreased libido) and sexual dysfunction

What are the risk factors for diabetes in men?

Gender is a risk element intended for diabetes, and males are at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than women.

Other risk factors for developing diabetes for both men and women include:

Family history: first degree relative with diabetes
Ethnicity: increased risk for Asians, Hispanics, and African Americans
Obesity
Fat distribution: more fat around the middle
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Sedentary lifestyle ( lack of exercise and/or not physically active )
Smoking
Excess alcohol intake
Lack of sleep
Low testosterone in males
An unhealthy diet with high-calorie content containing sugars and lacking beneficial compounds to increase wellness

How does diabetes affect men differently than women?

Men who have type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to have low testosterone (low-T) than guys who do not have diabetes. Because of the low levels of the hormone testosterone, men with diabetes can possess unhealthy symptoms that are not seen in women with diabetes.

Low testosterone can cause decreased sex drive, depression, insufficient energy, and reduced muscle mass. It can also cause male-specific sexual problems and urological complications.

Impotence problems (ED, impotence), pr inability to get or perhaps maintain an erection, is a common symptom of diabetes in men. Diabetic men experience erectile dysfunction at earlier ages than males who don’t have diabetes.

Another diabetes-related sex dysfunction symptom in guys is usually decreased amounts of ejaculations or retrograde ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation is actually a condition in which the semen goes into the bladder, rather than out of the body through the urethra. Diabetes and damage to the blood vessels cause nerve harm to the muscles that control the bladder and urethra, which results in this problem.

What are the long-term health complications of diabetes?

complications of diabetesLong-term diabetes-related problems include:

Hypertension
Heart disease
Nerve damage and neuropathy (nerve pain)
Kidney disease
Retinopathy (nerve harm in the eye and/or blindness)
Stroke
Skin infections
Peripheral vascular disease
Yeast infections

What is diabetic ketoacidosis?

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. The condition develops whenever your body can’t produce enough insulin.

Treatments: Insulin

Symptoms: Fruity-scented breath; Vomiting…

diabetes insipidus

Diabetes insipidus is an uncommon disorder that causes an imbalance of fluids in the body. This imbalance makes you very thirsty even if you’ve had something to drink. It also leads you to produce large amounts of urine.

Can diabetes be cured?

There is no cure for diabetes, but it can go into remission. People can manage it with medication and lifestyle changes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that develops when the body destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. This kind of means that people with type 1 diabetes do not make insulin.

Can diabetes kill you?

People with type 1 diabetes are more likely to get heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, high blood pressure, blindness, nerve damage, and gum disease. The untreated type you diabetes can cause a coma. It can even you do not. The good news is that treatment can help you prevent these problems.
